
Cpl. Jonathan B. Thornton
Jonathan was born in Appling Co. Ga. on Sept. 26, 1843. He enlisted on April 18, 1862 in Co. K of the 54th Georgia Inf. in Savannah Ga.. On July 30, 1862, Jonathan transferred to Co. C of the 1st Battalion Ga. Sharpshooters. Jonathan served until he became ill and was sent home sometime in November, 1863. It is unclear if he returned for service and may have in another unit. After the war and after the death of his first wife, Elizabeth Woods, he remarried Lorena Belle Daniel on Oct. 8, 1885. Together, they had twelve children. Jonathan was a farmer in now what is called Wayne Co. Ga. He died on Feb. 7, 1920 and is buried at Big Creek, Wayne Co. Jonathan was the brother of Timothy and nephew to James and William Thornton who also served in Co. C of the 1st Battalion Georgia Sharpshooters.
